Jama Masjid is one of the largest mosques in India which is located in Shahjahanabad, Old Delhi. The magnificence  of the mosque showcases the rich cultural history of the Mughal period. 

From the time of its establishment,  it is projected  as the majestic mosque of the Mughals, having a significant spiritual and historical importance. It is well known in the world for its profound significance among its community and as a religious site.  The worshippers gathering during the prayers shows a powerful display of brotherhood and devotion. History of Jama Masjid

This  magnificent mosque was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah and constructed between 1650 and 1656. The beautiful architecture of the mosque was designed by the Shah Jahan's minister Fazil Khan and construction was done under the supervision of Sadullah Khan another minister. 

It is constructed by the workers of Arabia, Persia, Europe and India. And,  the cost of construction was around 1 million. 

On July 23, 1656 the iman established the mosque. Syed Abdul Gafoor Shah Bukhari served as the Shahi Imam of the mosque on the request of Shah Jahan.

When British rule took control over India. The maintenance of the mosque was handled by the Britishers during the starting days. But, after the rebellious Indian revolted against British rule during 1857. The Britishers prohibited any kind of gathering on the mosque premises. Later on, the renovation of the mosque was undertaken twice, firstly by the Nawab of Rampur and then by the Nizams of Hyderabad. 

Architecture of Jama Masjid

With a height of 130 feet and width of 89 feet, Jama Masjid is considered to be one of the largest mosques in the country. This stunning mosque showcases the Indo-Islamic architecture. The complex consists of a large arched entrance, a big hall, long minarets and marble domes. 

The mosque is constructed of red sandstone which is carved with the Persian motifs. The gateways are reached by the stairs which are 30 steps above the ground floor. The courtyard or hall lies beyond the entrance. The east gateway is three storey tall, while the other two north and south gateway is two storey tall. 

The square courtyard or “Shan” is also built with red sandstone and encircled by the arcades. Highlighting the margin of the Shan, Chhatris are built above the tombs. The open area extended to 17 m long and 15 m wide with a Ablution tank made of black marble, situated at the middle. 

The prayer hall lies across the courtyard. The hall stretches to 61m long and 27m wide. At the front, there are 2 minarets and 3 domes are attached to it. The walls are inscripted with  Arabic and Persian calligraphy. 

The outside wall of the tower features a stripe design created with white marble on red sandstone. The minarets consist of 130 stairs with a height of 135 feet. 

The wall of the mosque is made up of red sandstone while black and white marbles are used to furnish the floor. The central and side domes consist of golden finials. On the Persian dome,  stripe designs are created with the white marble on red sandstone. 

There are three Jama Masjid in India, the main highlighting feature which differentiate Delhi's Jama Masjid from others is the use of both red sandstone and white marble in a large scale. 

Entry Fee and Timings

There is no fee to enter the mosque. But, if you want to enjoy the view from the above minaret, then it will cost around 100 INR. And, the timing is between 9:am to 5:30 pm. 

Mosque is open all days of the week from 7 am in the morning to 12 pm at noon and then from 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm. 

Facts and Tips 

  • The name Jama Masjid is derived from the name ‘Juman’ which is defined as the Friday prayer. Also, recognised with another name ‘Masjid-i-Jehan-Numa’ which signifies the mosque overlooking the world. 
  • Intimidated by the architecture of the Jama Masjid of Fatehpur Sikri and Agra, Shah Jahan  merged the both  in the Jama Masjid of Delhi. 
  • Shoes are prohibited inside the mosque premises. And, while visiting the mosque, dress modestly. Wear clothes which fully cover the shoulders and legs. 
  • The mosque gathers a large number of crowds during the entire festive month of Ramadan. The maximum number of visitors  are present on the eve of Eid. 

How to reach 

Jama Masjid is a few minutes drive away from the Red Fort. The Connaught Place is at a distance of 15 minutes drive from the mosque. Humayun’s Tomb is a 20 min drive. It takes nearly 40 minutes to drive to reach the mosque from Qutub Minar and Lotus Temple.
